La Botella's 2017 Local Holiday Gift List
Tis the time of the year where we gather closer to our friends and family, eat lots of yummy food, hibernate a bit, enjoy the crisp cool air and sometimes even share our love in the form of presents! While I wish I could share them all, today I'm going to share a selection of incredible local makers and ideas for who to gift them to!
For your friend who you are over the moon for, give them Rivtak's 2018 Celestial Calendar. They will have a full year of lunar events and will think about your friendship each time they see it. The calendars come in several different styles and sizes. River makes a variety of handmade goodies including silk kimonos, whimsical printed linens and feminist art work. Check her out at Freeman's Creative in Durham.
Anchor Leather Co.
A well made leather wallet is a gem that will last someone many years. Anchor Leather Co. out of Charlotte makes several wallet styles, custom belts, coasters, sunglasses cases and other gift ideas. Their vertical bifold pictured here is one of my favorite options. It has a classic look and functional design but also is a twist on the traditional bifold.
For the plant lover who has everything, Urbane Terrain, based in Durham, has an incredible selection of air plants (Tillandsia). The owner of the shop also offers several differetn workshops including one where you can make a mounted air plant display like the one pictured here. Check out her workshop calendar here.
Have you heard of Pamut Apparel? They are another NC based artist making super comfortable and stylish ethical clothing. All of their products are made with 100% cotton and dyed with eco friendlier water-based inks in well ventilated studios to ensure the safety of the environment and the producers. Pamut has a 'Tees for Good' line where you can find tees like this pinky swear tee that represents racial equality.
For fluffy friends, ClothUnion creates adorable and seriously strong collar and leash sets, toys, and accessories for dogs and cats. We have a collar and leash from ClothUnion for our 70lb pitbull/lab "puppy," the double handled leash is a lifesaver for working on 'heel' while out on walks. Right now she has a limited assortment of holiday collars, get em while they last!
Feather & Stone
Looking for a one of a kind jewelry gift? Feather and Stone uses feathers, gemstones and used bullet shells to create one of a kind pieces to fit a variety of styles. The piece shown here is adorned with amethyst and dyed quartz using 2 tandem bullet casings. Amelia has an endless stream of creativity and is constantly making new pieces and loves to make custom pieces as well.
Parmar Media is a maker I've admired for a while for their fresh take on maps. Their business focuses on on finding vintage maps of old cities and buildings and revamping them with his own style and color schemes. These are great gifts for people who love their city, national parks, baseball, you name it!
Chocolatay Confections If you haven't tried yet, you really are missing out. At the last Locally Made Market my booth was next to Danielle and I couldn't help but sample her delicious goodies and take some home myself. Pictured here is the Honeycomb bar, sooo good and I also heard they were in the process of making natural cherry cordials and hot cocoa ganache filled Santa lollipops! Get some for yourself, and maybe give them as a gift too if you don't eat them first!
What started as a unique handmade clothing shop has turned into a gorgeous hand painted mobile boutique, named Meraki for this maker. Moon.Flower.Child creates original designs from locally sourced fabrics to make a variety of styles. Her boutique sets up at local pop up shops weekly and offers a variety of locally made items including local honey made by her hubby, Buddha Bee Apiary!
Elle Woods Co.
If you need a gift for new homeowners or anyone with a keen sense of style, Elle Woods Co., offers an incredible selection of one of a kind and customizable pieces. Her speciality are the round wall art pieces featured here - I have a few myself :) She also makes serving trays perfect for giving your lovie a hint to serve you breakfast in bed (everyday). A little birdie also told me when she hits 2,000 followers she will offer a 20% discount, let's make it happen, here.
What About Something made by you?
While I always opt for supporting local makers, a handmade gift by you is always a great gift idea. Several of the makers above offer workshops if you need help getting started. And a special treat for anyone who made it to the end, I'll be hosting a candle workshop this month! Details to come. Here are a few DIY ideas to get you started:
- Handmade ornaments
- Baked goods
- Preserved foods from your garden
- A thoughtful handwritten letter
